Ch 5Verse 14
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 14

न कर्तृत्वं न कर्माणि लोकस्य सृजति प्रभु: | न कर्मफलसंयोगं स्वभावस्तु प्रवर्तते || १४ ||

na kartṛtvaṃ na karmāṇi lokasya sṛjati prabhuḥ | na karma-phala-saṃyogaṃ svabhāvas tu pravartate || 14 ||

"The embodied spirit, master of the city of his body, does not create activities, nor does he induce people to act, nor does he create the fruits of action. All this is enacted by the modes of material nature."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna continues to deconstruct the illusion of the 'Doer.' He declares: The Lord or Master of the body (prabhuḥ—referring to the pure Atman/Soul) does absolutely not create or generate the sense of doership (na kartṛtvaṃ sṛjati), nor does it create the actions themselves (na karmāṇi lokasya). Furthermore, the soul does not create the connection or entanglement with the fruits of those actions (na karma-phala-saṃyogaṃ). If the soul doesn't do it, who does? Krishna reveals the mechanism: It is simply material nature and its inherent qualities that initiate and enact all of this (svabhāvas tu pravartate).
