Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having explained the *trigger* for His arrival (Verse 7), Krishna now outlines His exact three-fold mission statement. 1. Paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṃ: To protect, deliver, and rescue the good, pious, and saintly people. 2. Vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām: To completely annihilate and destroy the wicked, corrupt, and evil-doers. 3. Dharma-saṃsthāpanārthāya: For the purpose of firmly re-establishing the foundations of Dharma (righteousness). To execute these three objectives, He manifests (sambhavāmi) from age to age, millennium after millennium (yuge yuge).
