Adhyāya 4 Shloka 7

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत | अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् || ७ ||

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata | abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmy aham || 7 ||

"Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion—at that time I descend Myself."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is perhaps the most universally recognized verse of the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna establishes the cosmic trigger for His manifestation. He states: Whenever and wherever (yadā yadā hi) there is a severe decline, decay, or fading (glānir) of Dharma (righteousness/cosmic order), O descendant of Bharata (bhārata). And simultaneously, a dominant rise or surging (abhyutthānam) of Adharma (injustice/chaos). At that precise critical mass, I manifest or create Myself (tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmy aham).
