Ch 4Verse 5
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 5

श्रीभगवानुवाच | बहूनि मे व्यतीतानि जन्मानि तव चार्जुन | तान्यहं वेद सर्वाणि न त्वं वेत्थ परन्तप || ५ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | bahūni me vyatītāni janmāni tava cārjuna | tāny ahaṃ veda sarvāṇi na tvaṃ vettha parantapa || 5 ||

"The Personality of Godhead said: Many, many births both you and I have passed. I can remember all of them, but you cannot, O subduer of the enemy!"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna completely shatters Arjuna's linear timeline. He answers the biological challenge with a metaphysical hammer blow: 'O Arjuna, many, many births (bahūni janmāni) have passed away (vyatītāni) for Me, and also for you (me tava ca).' Both of them have been born countless times. The difference is not in the age of the soul, but in the bandwidth of memory. Krishna declares: 'I know and remember absolutely all of them (tāny ahaṃ veda sarvāṇi), but you do not know or remember them (na tvaṃ vettha), O chastiser of enemies (parantapa).'
