Ch 4Verse 4
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 4

अर्जुन उवाच | अपरं भवतो जन्म परं जन्म विवस्वत: | कथमेतद्विजानीयां त्वमादौ प्रोक्तवानिति || ४ ||

arjuna uvāca | aparaṃ bhavato janma paraṃ janma vivasvataḥ | katham etad vijānīyāṃ tvam ādau proktavān iti || 4 ||

"Arjuna said: The sun-god Vivasvan is senior by birth to You. How am I to understand that in the beginning You instructed this science to him?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna's intellect hits a massive chronological roadblock. He looks at Krishna, his contemporary cousin and friend, and states a biological fact: Your birth (bhavato janma) is recent or 'aparam' (junior/later). However, the birth of the sun-god Vivasvan (janma vivasvataḥ) is 'param' (senior/ancient), occurring at the dawn of the universe. Therefore, Arjuna asks logically: How on earth am I supposed to understand or believe (katham etad vijānīyāṃ) that You instructed this science to him in the very beginning (tvam ādau proktavān iti)?
