Ch 4Verse 3
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 3

स एवायं मया तेऽद्य योग: प्रोक्त: पुरातन: | भक्तोऽसि मे सखा चेति रहस्यं ह्येतदुत्तमम् || ३ ||

sa evāyaṃ mayā te 'dya yogaḥ proktaḥ purātanaḥ | bhakto 'si me sakhā ceti rahasyaṃ hy etad uttamam || 3 ||

"That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by Me to you because you are My devotee as well as My friend; therefore you can understand the transcendental mystery of this science."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna bridges the ancient past with the immediate present. He says: That exact same (sa evāyaṃ), ancient (purātanaḥ) yoga which was lost to time, is today (adya) being spoken and revealed by Me to you (mayā te proktaḥ). Why Arjuna? Krishna gives two specific qualifications: 'Because you are my devotee (bhakto 'si me) and you are my friend (sakhā ceti).' Because Arjuna holds this specific psychological and spiritual posture, he is capable of receiving this supreme, transcendental secret (rahasyaṃ hy etad uttamam).
