Ch 4Verse 2
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 2

एवं परम्पराप्राप्तमिमं राजर्षयो विदु: | स कालेनेह महता योगो नष्ट: परन्तप || २ ||

evaṃ paramparā-prāptam imaṃ rājarṣayo viduḥ | sa kāleneha mahatā yogo naṣṭaḥ parantapa || 2 ||

"This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna continues detailing the history of this knowledge. He says it was received precisely in this way through a continuous chain of succession (evaṃ paramparā-prāptam), and historically, it was the saintly kings (rājarṣayo) who understood and wielded it (viduḥ). However, over a vast expanse of time (sa kāleneha mahatā), this unbroken chain was severed, and therefore, O Arjuna (parantapa), this great yoga now appears to be lost or destroyed in the world (yogo naṣṭaḥ).
