Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Chapter 4 opens with Krishna revealing the cosmic genealogy of the knowledge he has just imparted. He declares: I originally instructed (proktavān aham) this exact same yoga (imaṃ yogaṃ) to Vivasvan, the presiding deity of the Sun. He characterizes this yoga as 'avyayam' (imperishable or inexhaustible). The lineage then passed chronologically: Vivasvan taught it to Manu (the progenitor of humanity), and Manu passed it to King Ikshvaku (the founder of the solar dynasty of kings on Earth).
