Aligning Consciousness

Ch 4Verse 40
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 40

अज्ञश्चाश्रद्दधानश्च संशयात्मा विनश्यति | नायं लोकोऽस्ति न परो न सुखं संशयात्मन: || ४० ||

ajñaś cāśraddadhānaś ca saṃśayātmā vinaśyati | nāyaṃ loko 'sti na paro na sukhaṃ saṃśayātmanaḥ || 40 ||

"But ignorant and faithless persons who doubt the revealed scriptures do not attain God consciousness; they fall down. For the doubting soul there is happiness neither in this world nor in the next."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers the terrifying dark side of the coin from Verse 39. He lists the three toxic traits that guarantee destruction: the ignorant person (ajñaś), the one devoid of faith (aśraddadhānaś), and the chronic doubter or cynic (saṃśayātmā). Such a person is utterly ruined and falls down (vinaśyati). Krishna concludes with a brutal, absolute diagnosis: For the chronically doubting soul (saṃśayātmanaḥ), there is absolutely no happiness or success in this material world (nāyaṃ loko 'sti), nor in the spiritual world to come (na paro), nor is there any joy anywhere (na sukhaṃ).
