Ch 4Verse 37
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 37

यथैधांसि समिद्धोऽग्निर्भस्मसात्कुरुतेऽर्जुन | ज्ञानाग्नि: सर्वकर्माणि भस्मसात्कुरुते तथा || ३७ ||

yathaidhāṃsi samiddho 'gnir bhasma-sāt kurute 'rjuna | jñānāgniḥ sarva-karmāṇi bhasma-sāt kurute tathā || 37 ||

"As a blazing fire turns firewood to ashes, O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge burn to ashes all reactions to material activities."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

To illustrate precisely how the 'boat of knowledge' handles the massive weight of past Karma, Krishna shifts the metaphor from water to fire. He says: Just as (yathā) a blazing, fully kindled fire (samiddho 'gnir) turns firewood (edhāṃsi) completely into ashes (bhasma-sāt kurute), O Arjuna, in the exact same way (tathā), the blazing fire of Knowledge (jñānāgniḥ) turns absolutely all karmic reactions (sarva-karmāṇi) into ashes (bhasma-sāt kurute).
