Aligning Consciousness

Ch 4Verse 24
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 24

ब्रह्मार्पणं ब्रह्म हविर्ब्रह्माग्नौ ब्रह्मणा हुतम् | ब्रह्मैव तेन गन्तव्यं ब्रह्मकर्मसमाधिना || २४ ||

brahmārpaṇaṃ brahma havir brahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam | brahmaiva tena gantavyaṃ brahma-karma-samādhinā || 24 ||

"A person who is fully absorbed in Krishna consciousness is sure to attain the spiritual kingdom because of his full contribution to spiritual activities, in which the consummation is absolute and that which is offered is of the same spiritual nature."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most sublime and frequently chanted verses in Vedanta, encapsulating the absolute pinnacle of Non-Duality (Advaita). Krishna takes the imagery of a traditional Vedic fire sacrifice (Yajna) and completely shatters the illusion of its physical components. He declares: The act of offering itself is Brahman (brahmārpaṇaṃ). The oblation/butter being offered is Brahman (brahma havir). It is offered into the fire of Brahman (brahmāgnau). It is offered by the priest, who is also Brahman (brahmaṇā hutam). Because the person is entirely absorbed in this action as Brahman (brahma-karma-samādhinā), the ultimate destination they reach is Brahman alone (brahmaiva tena gantavyaṃ).
