Ch 4Verse 22
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 22

यदृच्छालाभसन्तुष्टो द्वन्द्वातीतो विमत्सर: | सम: सिद्धावसिद्धौ च कृत्वापि न निबध्यते || २२ ||

yadṛcchā-lābha-santuṣṭo dvandvātīto vimatsaraḥ | samaḥ siddhāv asiddhau ca kṛtvāpi na nibadhyate || 22 ||

"He who is satisfied with gain which comes of its own accord, who is free from duality and does not envy, who is steady in both success and failure, is never entangled, although performing actions."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna provides four behavioral markers of a mind immune to karma. The master is completely satisfied with whatever profit or gain arrives naturally, without desperate striving (yadṛcchā-lābha-santuṣṭo). They have utterly transcended the dualities of the world, like heat/cold, pleasure/pain, honor/dishonor (dvandvātīto). They are entirely free from envy and jealousy (vimatsaraḥ). Because they remain perfectly steady and equal-minded in both success and failure (samaḥ siddhāv asiddhau ca), even though they perform massive actions (kṛtvāpi), they are never bound by them (na nibadhyate).
