Ch 4Verse 21
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 21

निराशीर्यतचित्तात्मा त्यक्तसर्वपरिग्रह: | शारीरं केवलं कर्म कुर्वन्नाप्नोति किल्बिषम् || २१ ||

nirāśīr yata-cittātmā tyakta-sarva-parigrahaḥ | śārīraṃ kevalaṃ karma kurvan nāpnoti kilbiṣam || 21 ||

"Such a man of understanding acts with mind and intelligence perfectly controlled, gives up all sense of proprietorship over his possessions, and acts only for the bare necessities of life. Thus working, he is not affected by sinful reactions."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna details the practical lifestyle of the liberated actor described in the previous verse. This person operates utterly without expectations or craving (nirāśīr). Their mind and intellect are perfectly restrained and synchronized (yata-cittātmā). They have entirely abandoned all hoarding, possessiveness, and the anxious accumulation of wealth (tyakta-sarva-parigrahaḥ). Because they perform actions purely for the physical maintenance of the body (śārīraṃ kevalaṃ karma kurvan), they incur no sin, fault, or karmic reaction (nāpnoti kilbiṣam).
