त्यक्त्वा कर्मफलासङ्गं नित्यतृप्तो निराश्रय: | कर्मण्यभिप्रवृत्तोऽपि नैव किञ्चित्करोति स: || २० ||

tyaktvā karma-phalāsaṅgaṃ nitya-tṛpto nirāśrayaḥ | karmaṇy abhipravṛtto 'pi naiva kiñcit karoti saḥ || 20 ||

"Abandoning all attachment to the results of his activities, ever satisfied and independent, he performs no fruitive action, although engaged in all kinds of endeavors."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna paints the ultimate portrait of the liberated actor in the world. This master has completely abandoned all attachment to the fruits of their actions (tyaktvā karma-phalāsaṅgaṃ). As a result of this internal renunciation, they exist in a state of eternal satisfaction (nitya-tṛpto) and absolute independence, leaning on no one and nothing (nirāśrayaḥ). Even though this person is intensely and fully engaged in all kinds of endeavors and enterprises in the world (karmaṇy abhipravṛtto 'pi), in truth, he is doing absolutely nothing at all (naiva kiñcit karoti saḥ).
