Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explains how a person practically achieves the paradoxical state of Verse 18. He says that a person whose every single undertaking and endeavor (yasya sarve samārambhāḥ) is completely devoid of selfish desire and egoic calculation (kāma-saṅkalpa-varjitāḥ) is a true master. For this person, all karmic reactions have been burned to ashes by the blazing fire of knowledge (jñānāgni-dagdha-karmāṇaṃ). The wise seers (budhāḥ) call such a person a true sage or learned scholar (tam āhuḥ paṇḍitaṃ).
