Ch 4Verse 18
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 18

कर्मण्यकर्म य: पश्येदकर्मणि च कर्म य: | स बुद्धिमान्मनुष्येषु स युक्त: कृत्स्नकर्मकृत् || १८ ||

karmaṇy akarma yaḥ paśyed akarmaṇi ca karma yaḥ | sa buddhimān manuṣyeṣu sa yuktaḥ kṛtsna-karma-kṛt || 18 ||

"One who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, is intelligent among men, and he is in the transcendental position, although engaged in all sorts of activities."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is the paradox that resolves the bewilderment of Verse 16. Krishna states: One who sees (yaḥ paśyed) inaction in action (karmaṇy akarma), and who sees action in inaction (akarmaṇi ca karma yaḥ)—that person is truly intelligent among all humans (sa buddhimān manuṣyeṣu). That person is perfectly yoked to the Divine (sa yuktaḥ) and is a performer of all actions flawlessly (kṛtsna-karma-kṛt).
