Ch 4Verse 17
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 17

कर्मणो ह्यपि बोद्धव्यं बोद्धव्यं च विकर्मण: | अकर्मणश्च बोद्धव्यं गहना कर्मणो गति: || १७ ||

karmaṇo hy api boddhavyaṃ boddhavyaṃ ca vikarmaṇaḥ | akarmaṇaś ca boddhavyaṃ gahanā karmaṇo gatiḥ || 17 ||

"The intricacies of action are very hard to understand. Therefore one should know properly what action is, what forbidden action is, and what inaction is."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna breaks the concept of 'work' into three distinct categories that must be deeply understood (boddhavyaṃ). 1. Karma: Prescribed, proper action in alignment with Dharma. 2. Vikarma: Forbidden, toxic, or destructive action that violates Dharma. 3. Akarma: Inaction, or action that produces no karmic reaction. He emphasizes the urgency of understanding these three because the path and trajectory of action (karmaṇo gatiḥ) is incredibly deep, thick, and impenetrable (gahanā).
