Ch 4Verse 16
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 16

किं कर्म किमकर्मेति कवयोऽप्यत्र मोहिता: | तत्ते कर्म प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात् || १६ ||

kiṃ karma kim akarmeti kavayo 'py atra mohitāḥ | tat te karma pravakṣyāmi yaj jñātvā mokṣyase 'śubhāt || 16 ||

"Even the intelligent are bewildered in determining what is action and what is inaction. Now I shall explain to you what action is, knowing which you shall be liberated from all misfortune."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna acknowledges the extreme difficulty of the subject matter. He states that figuring out 'what is action?' (kiṃ karma) and 'what is inaction?' (kim akarmeti) is so complex that even the highly intelligent, the scholars, and the seers (kavayo 'pi) are bewildered or deluded (mohitāḥ) regarding this. Because of this widespread confusion, Krishna promises: I shall clearly explain this 'action' to you (tat te karma pravakṣyāmi), knowing which (yaj jñātvā) you will be absolutely liberated from all evil and misfortune (mokṣyase 'śubhāt).
