Ch 4Verse 15
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 15

एवं ज्ञात्वा कृतं कर्म पूर्वैरपि मुमुक्षुभि: | कुरु कर्मैव तस्मात्त्वं पूर्वै: पूर्वतरं कृतम् || १५ ||

evaṃ jñātvā kṛtaṃ karma pūrvair api mumukṣubhiḥ | kuru karmaiva tasmāt tvaṃ pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraṃ kṛtam || 15 ||

"All the liberated souls in ancient times acted with this understanding of My transcendental nature. Therefore, you should perform your duty, following in their footsteps."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna brings the profound philosophy back to immediate, practical application. He tells Arjuna that knowing this exact truth (evaṃ jñātvā)—that action without attachment does not bind—the seekers of liberation in ancient times (pūrvair api mumukṣubhiḥ) performed their actions (kṛtaṃ karma). He concludes with a definitive command: Therefore (tasmāt), you must perform your duty (kuru karmaiva tvaṃ), exactly as it was performed by the ancients in ancient times (pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraṃ kṛtam).
