Ch 4Verse 13
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 13

चातुर्वर्ण्यं मया सृष्टं गुणकर्मविभागश: | तस्य कर्तारमपि मां विद्ध्यकर्तारमव्ययम् || १३ ||

cātur-varṇyaṃ mayā sṛṣṭaṃ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ | tasya kartāram api māṃ viddhy akartāram avyayam || 13 ||

"According to the three modes of material nature and the work associated with them, the four divisions of human society are created by Me. And although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the nondoer, being unchangeable."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most sociologically and historically explosive verses in the text. Krishna declares: The system of the four social orders (cātur-varṇyaṃ) was created by Me (mayā sṛṣṭaṃ). How was it divided? Strictly according to the divisions of qualities and actions (guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ). He then adds a profound theological paradox: Even though I am the creator of this system (tasya kartāram api māṃ), you must know Me to be the non-doer and absolutely unchangeable (viddhy akartāram avyayam).
