Ch 4Verse 12
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 12

काङ्क्षन्त: कर्मणां सिद्धिं यजन्त इह देवता: | क्षिप्रं हि मानुषे लोके सिद्धिर्भवति कर्मजा || १२ ||

kāṅkṣantaḥ karmaṇāṃ siddhiṃ yajanta iha devatāḥ | kṣipraṃ hi mānuṣe loke siddhir bhavati karmajā || 12 ||

"Men in this world desire success in fruitive activities, and therefore they worship the demigods. Quickly, of course, men get results from fruitive work in this world."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explains human sociology and the desire for quick results. He states that in this human world (iha mānuṣe loke), men intensely desire success and perfection in their material activities (kāṅkṣantaḥ karmaṇāṃ siddhiṃ). Because they want these results quickly, they worship and sacrifice to the demigods or lesser authorities (yajanta devatāḥ). Krishna validates their method: indeed, success born of such material work (siddhir karmajā) happens very quickly (kṣipraṃ hi) in this world.
