Ch 4Verse 10
Adhyāya 4 Shloka 10

वीतरागभयक्रोधा मन्मया मामुपाश्रिता: | बहवो ज्ञानतपसा पूता मद्भावमागता: || १० ||

vīta-rāga-bhaya-krodhā man-mayā mām upāśritāḥ | bahavo jñāna-tapasā pūtā mad-bhāvam āgatāḥ || 10 ||

"Being freed from attachment, fear and anger, being fully absorbed in Me and taking refuge in Me, many, many persons in the past became purified by knowledge of Me—and thus they all attained transcendental love for Me."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

To prove that the promise in Verse 9 is not theoretical, Krishna points to historical evidence. He states that in the past, 'many, many persons' (bahavo) have achieved this exact liberation. How did they do it? They completely eradicated attachment, fear, and anger (vīta-rāga-bhaya-krodhā). They became entirely absorbed in Me (man-mayā) and took absolute refuge in Me (mām upāśritāḥ). Through the fierce austerity of this knowledge, they were burned clean and purified (jñāna-tapasā pūtā). Having done this, they all attained My spiritual nature and supreme love (mad-bhāvam āgatāḥ).
