Ch 3Verse 9
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 9

यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धन: | तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्ग: समाचर || ९ ||

yajñārthāt karmaṇo 'nyatra loko 'yaṃ karma-bandhanaḥ | tad-arthaṃ karma kaunteya mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara || 9 ||

"Work done as a sacrifice for Vishnu has to be performed, otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna introduces the supreme operating principle of the universe: Yajña (Sacrifice/Offering). He states an absolute law: If action is performed for any reason other than as a sacrifice (yajñārthāt karmaṇo 'nyatra), that action will bind the soul to the material world (loko 'yaṃ karma-bandhanaḥ). Therefore, he commands Arjuna to perform his actions entirely for the sake of that sacrifice (tad-arthaṃ karma), completely freed from personal attachment (mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara).
