Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna roots the concept of Yajña (Sacrifice) in the very origin of the universe. He explains that at the beginning of creation, the Creator (Prajāpatiḥ) created humanity (prajāḥ sṛṣṭvā) together with the principle of sacrifice (saha-yajñāḥ). The Creator declared: 'By this principle of sacrifice, you shall multiply and prosper (anena prasaviṣyadhvam). Let this sacrifice be the fulfiller of all your desires and necessities (eṣa vo 'stv iṣṭa-kāma-dhuk).'
