Ch 3Verse 6
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 6

कर्मेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य य आस्ते मनसा स्मरन् | इन्द्रियार्थान्विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचार: स उच्यते || ६ ||

karmendriyāṇi saṃyamya ya āste manasā smaran | indriyārthān vimūḍhātmā mithyācāraḥ sa ucyate || 6 ||

"One who restrains the senses of action but whose mind dwells on sense objects certainly deludes himself and is called a pretender (hypocrite)."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers a scathing critique of false asceticism. He describes a person who physically restrains their organs of action (karmendriyāṇi saṃyamya)—refusing to speak, work, or engage with the world. Yet, internally, this person sits and constantly remembers or dwells upon (manasā smaran) the objects of the senses (indriyārthān). Krishna diagnoses this person as a 'vimūḍhātmā' (a completely deluded soul) and officially labels them a 'mithyācāraḥ' (a hypocrite or pretender).
