Ch 3Verse 5
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 5

न हि कश्चित्क्षणमपि जातु तिष्ठत्यकर्मकृत् | कार्यते ह्यवश: कर्म सर्व: प्रकृतिजैर्गुणै: || ५ ||

na hi kaścit kṣaṇam api jātu tiṣṭhaty akarma-kṛt | kāryate hy avaśaḥ karma sarvaḥ prakṛti-jair guṇaiḥ || 5 ||

"Everyone is forced to act helplessly according to the qualities he has acquired from the modes of material nature; therefore no one can refrain from doing something, not even for a moment."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers a crushing blow to the fantasy of 'inaction.' He states an absolute, inescapable law of biology and physics: No one (na hi kaścit), not even for a single split-second (kṣaṇam api), can ever remain completely inactive (tiṣṭhaty akarma-kṛt). Why? Because absolutely everyone (sarvaḥ) is forced to act helplessly (kāryate hy avaśaḥ) by the Gunas (qualities) born of material nature (prakṛti-jair guṇaiḥ).
