Ch 3Verse 4
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 4

न कर्मणामनारम्भान्नैष्कर्म्यं पुरुषोऽश्नुते | न च संन्यसनादेव सिद्धिं समधिगच्छति || ४ ||

na karmaṇām anārambhān naiṣkarmyaṃ puruṣo 'śnute | na ca saṃnyasanād eva siddhiṃ samadhigacchati || 4 ||

"Not by merely abstaining from work can one achieve freedom from reaction, nor by renunciation alone can one attain perfection."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna systematically dismantles Arjuna's dream of becoming a monk to avoid the war. He establishes two absolute rules of reality. First: a person does not achieve 'Naiṣkarmyam' (the state of being free from karmic reaction) simply by not starting or avoiding actions (anārambhān). Second: a person does not achieve spiritual perfection (siddhiṃ) simply by formally renouncing the world and taking up the robes of a Sannyasi (saṃnyasanād eva). Physical cessation of action does not equal spiritual liberation.
