Ch 3Verse 40
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 40

इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिरस्याधिष्ठानमुच्यते | एतैर्विमोहयत्येष ज्ञानमावृत्य देहिनम् || ४० ||

indriyāṇi mano buddhir asyādhiṣṭhānam ucyate | etair vimohayatyeṣa jñānam āvṛtya dehinam || 40 ||

"The senses, the mind, and the intelligence are said to be the sitting places of this lust. Through them, lust covers the real knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

To defeat an enemy, you must know where they hide. Krishna maps out the exact geographical bases (adhiṣṭhānam) of Kāma (lust/desire). The enemy has three fortresses: the senses (indriyāṇi), the mind (mano), and the intellect (buddhiḥ). By occupying these three strategic command centers, this enemy completely covers and suffocates the true knowledge (jñānam āvṛtya) of the embodied soul (dehinam), leaving the person utterly bewildered (vimohayatyeṣa).
