Aligning Consciousness

Ch 3Verse 39
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 39

आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरिणा | कामरूपेण कौन्तेय दुष्पूरेणानलेन च || ३९ ||

āvṛtaṃ jñānam etena jñānino nitya-vairiṇā | kāma-rūpeṇa kaunteya duṣpūreṇānalena ca || 39 ||

"Thus the wise living entity's pure consciousness becomes covered by his eternal enemy in the form of lust, which is never satisfied and which burns like fire."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna summarizes the devastating nature of the enemy. The pure knowledge and consciousness (jñānam) of even the wise (jñānino) remains covered (āvṛtaṃ) by this force. Krishna calls it the 'nitya-vairiṇā' (the constant, eternal enemy). It takes the form of lust/desire (kāma-rūpeṇa). Finally, he defines its most terrifying characteristic: it is 'duṣpūreṇa' (insatiable / never fulfilled) and burns like an unquenchable fire (analena ca).
