arjuna uvāca | atha kena prayukto 'yaṃ pāpaṃ carati pūruṣaḥ | anicchann api vārṣṇeya balād iva niyojitaḥ || 36 ||

"Arjuna said: O descendant of Vrishni, by what is one impelled to sinful acts, even unwillingly, as if engaged by force?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna asks one of the most profound and universally relatable questions in the history of philosophy. He addresses Krishna (Vārṣṇeya) and asks: 'By what force is a person impelled or driven (kena prayukto 'yaṃ) to commit sinful or destructive acts (pāpaṃ carati pūruṣaḥ)? They do this even when they do not want to (anicchann api), as if they are being dragged and engaged into it by sheer, inescapable force (balād iva niyojitaḥ)?'
