Ch 3Verse 37
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 37

श्रीभगवानुवाच | काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भव: | महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम् || ३७ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ | mahāśano mahā-pāpmā viddhy enam iha vairiṇam || 37 ||

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born of contact with the material mode of passion and later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna immediately names the hidden enemy Arjuna asked about in Verse 36. It is 'Kāma' (lust/intense desire). Krishna says: It is Kāma alone, and it is Krodha (anger) alone (kāma eṣa krodha eṣa). They are the same entity, born directly from the mode of passion (rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ). Krishna gives this enemy two terrifying titles: 'mahāśano' (the all-devouring glutton) and 'mahā-pāpmā' (the great sinner/evil). He commands Arjuna: Know this (viddhi enam) to be the ultimate enemy in this world (iha vairiṇam).
