Ch 3Verse 35
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 35

श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुण: परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् | स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेय: परधर्मो भयावह: || ३५ ||

śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt sv-anuṣṭhitāt | sva-dharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ || 35 ||

"It is far better to discharge one's prescribed duties, even though faultily, than another's duties perfectly. Destruction in the course of performing one's own duty is better than engaging in another's duties, for to follow another's path is fraught with danger."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most frequently quoted verses in the Gita. Krishna states unequivocally that one's own duty (sva-dharmo), even if performed with faults or lacking merit (viguṇaḥ), is vastly superior (śreyān) to the duty of another (para-dharmāt), even if that other duty is performed perfectly (sv-anuṣṭhitāt). He concludes with a chilling guarantee: Dying while performing your own duty is glorious and beneficial (sva-dharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ), but taking up another's path is dangerous and fraught with fear (para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ).
