Ch 3Verse 33
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 33

सदृशं चेष्टते स्वस्या: प्रकृतेर्ज्ञानवानपि | प्रकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि निग्रह: किं करिष्यति || ३३ ||

sadṛśaṃ ceṣṭate svasyāḥ prakṛter jñānavān api | prakṛtiṃ yānti bhūtāni nigrahaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati || 33 ||

"Even a man of knowledge acts according to his own nature, for everyone follows the nature he has acquired from the three modes. What can repression accomplish?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is a breathtakingly realistic psychological observation. Krishna states that absolutely everyone, even a highly realized man of knowledge (jñānavān api), acts and behaves in accordance with their own innate material nature (sadṛśaṃ ceṣṭate svasyāḥ prakṛter). All living beings automatically follow their innate nature (prakṛtiṃ yānti bhūtāni). Because of this inescapable biological and psychological reality, Krishna asks a devastating rhetorical question: 'nigrahaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati' (What can forced repression accomplish?).
