Ch 3Verse 27
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 27

प्रकृते: क्रियमाणानि गुणै: कर्माणि सर्वश: | अहङ्कारविमूढात्मा कर्ताहमिति मन्यते || २७ ||

prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ | ahaṅkāra-vimūḍhātmā kartāham iti manyate || 27 ||

"The spirit soul bewildered by the influence of false ego thinks himself the doer of activities that are in actuality carried out by the three modes of material nature."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most profound metaphysical statements in the Gita. Krishna explains that all activities, in every respect (karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ), are actually being carried out (kriyamāṇāni) by the modes or qualities of material nature (prakṛteḥ guṇaiḥ). However, the soul whose mind is utterly bewildered by the false ego (ahaṅkāra-vimūḍhātmā) foolishly thinks to itself: 'I am the doer' (kartāham iti manyate).
