Ch 3Verse 25
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 25

सक्ता: कर्मण्यविद्वांसो यथा कुर्वन्ति भारत | कुर्याद्विद्वांस्तथासक्तश्चिकीर्षुर्लोकसंग्रहम् || २५ ||

saktāḥ karmaṇy avidvāṃso yathā kurvanti bhārata | kuryād vidvāṃs tathāsaktaś cikīrṣur loka-saṅgraham || 25 ||

"As the ignorant perform their duties with attachment to results, the learned may similarly act, but without attachment, for the sake of leading people on the right path."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This verse presents a brilliant visual and philosophical paradox. Krishna compares the ignorant person (avidvāṃso) to the wise person (vidvāṃs). The ignorant person performs their duties heavily attached to the results (saktāḥ karmaṇi). Krishna commands that the wise person should act exactly as intensely (yathā kurvanti... tathā), BUT entirely without attachment (asaktaḥ). Why must the wise act so intensely if they don't care about the result? Solely with the desire to maintain the welfare of the world and set the standard (cikīrṣur loka-saṅgraham).
