Ch 3Verse 24
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 24

उत्सीदेयुरिमे लोका न कुर्यां कर्म चेदहम् | सङ्करस्य च कर्ता स्यामुपहन्यामिमा: प्रजा: || २४ ||

utsīdeyur ime lokā na kuryāṃ karma ced aham | saṅkarasya ca kartā syām upahanyām imāḥ prajāḥ || 24 ||

"If I did not perform work, all these worlds would be put to ruination. I would be the cause of creating unwanted population, and I would thereby destroy the peace of all living beings."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna spells out the apocalyptic endgame of His inaction. He declares: 'If I did not perform my work (na kuryāṃ karma ced aham), all these worlds would fall into ruin (utsīdeyur ime lokā).' The failure of the Supreme to maintain order would make Him the creator of 'saṅkarasya' (chaos/unwanted mixture/corruption of society). Consequently, He would be the active destroyer (upahanyām) of all these living beings and their peace (imāḥ prajāḥ).
