Ch 3Verse 20
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 20

कर्मणैव हि संसिद्धिमास्थिता जनकादय: | लोकसंग्रहमेवापि सम्पश्यन्कर्तुमर्हसि || २० ||

karmaṇaiva hi saṃsiddhim āsthitā janakādayaḥ | loka-saṅgraham evāpi sampaśyan kartum arhasi || 20 ||

"Kings such as Janaka attained perfection solely by performance of prescribed duties. Therefore, just for the sake of educating the people in general, you should perform your work."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

To prove that Karma Yoga (unattached action) actually works, Krishna provides a historical precedent. He points to legendary philosopher-kings like Janaka (janakādayaḥ), who attained absolute spiritual perfection (saṃsiddhim āsthitā) purely through the execution of their worldly duties (karmaṇaiva hi). Furthermore, Krishna introduces a new, massive motivation for action: 'Loka-saṅgraham'. Even if Arjuna feels he doesn't need to work for his own purification, he must still perform his duty simply for the sake of holding the world together and guiding the masses by example (loka-saṅgraham evāpi sampaśyan).
