Ch 3Verse 19
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 19

तस्मादसक्त: सततं कार्यं कर्म समाचर | असक्तो ह्याचरन्कर्म परमाप्नोति पूरुष: || १९ ||

tasmād asaktaḥ satataṃ kāryaṃ karma samācara | asakto hy ācaran karma param āpnoti pūruṣaḥ || 19 ||

"Therefore, without being attached to the fruits of activities, one should act as a matter of duty, for by working without attachment one attains the Supreme."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

After describing the rare, liberated sage who has no duty (Verses 17-18), Krishna brings the focus squarely back to Arjuna with the word 'Tasmāt' (Therefore). Because Arjuna is NOT yet that fully liberated sage, Krishna commands him: 'Asaktaḥ satataṃ' (remaining constantly unattached), you must properly perform (samācara) the work that is your prescribed duty (kāryaṃ karma). Why? Because a person who performs their duty completely unattached (asakto hy ācaran karma) inevitably attains the Supreme Destination (param āpnoti pūruṣaḥ).
