Ch 3Verse 18
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 18

नैव तस्य कृतेनार्थो नाकृतेनेह कश्चन | न चास्य सर्वभूतेषु कश्चिदर्थव्यपाश्रय: || १८ ||

naiva tasya kṛtenārtho nākṛteneha kaścana | na cāsya sarva-bhūteṣu kaścid artha-vyapāśrayaḥ || 18 ||

"A self-realized man has no purpose to fulfill in the discharge of his prescribed duties, nor has he any reason not to perform such work. Nor has he any need to depend on any other living being."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna expands on the absolute freedom of the sage mentioned in verse 17. For this liberated person, there is no purpose or gain to be achieved by doing work (naiva tasya kṛtenārtho), nor is there any sin or loss incurred by not doing work (nākṛteneha kaścana). Furthermore, among all living beings (sarva-bhūteṣu), from a tiny ant up to the highest creator-god (Brahma), the sage has zero dependence on anyone for anything (na ca kaścid artha-vyapāśrayaḥ).
