Ch 3Verse 14
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 14

अन्नाद्भवन्ति भूतानि पर्जन्यादन्नसम्भव: | यज्ञाद्भवति पर्जन्यो यज्ञ: कर्मसमुद्भव: || १४ ||

annād bhavanti bhūtāni parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ | yajñād bhavati parjanyo yajñaḥ karma-samudbhavaḥ || 14 ||

"All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains. Rains are produced by performance of yajna (sacrifice), and yajna is born of prescribed duties."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explicitly maps out the 'Cosmic Wheel' (Chakra) of existence, linking biology, meteorology, and human action into a single unbreakable chain. He begins with the physical: Living beings are born of and sustained by food (annād bhavanti bhūtāni). Food is produced by rain (parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ). Rain is produced by the performance of sacrifice (yajñād bhavati parjanyo). And sacrifice is born from the execution of prescribed action/duty (yajñaḥ karma-samudbhavaḥ).
