Ch 3Verse 13
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 13

यज्ञशिष्टाशिन: सन्तो मुच्यन्ते सर्वकिल्बिषै: | भुञ्जते ते त्वघं पापा ये पचन्त्यात्मकारणात् || १३ ||

yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ santo mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ | bhuñjate te tv aghaṃ pāpā ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt || 13 ||

"The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna expands on the concept of the 'thief' by contrasting two types of eaters. Good, saintly people (santaḥ) who eat the remnants of a sacrifice (yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ) are released from all sins and karmic reactions (mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ). On the other hand, the sinful people (pāpā) who cook and prepare food purely for their own selfish enjoyment (ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt)—verily, those people are eating nothing but sin (bhuñjate te tv aghaṃ).
