Ch 2Verse 9
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 9

सञ्जय उवाच | एवमुक्त्वा हृषीकेशं गुडाकेशः परन्तप | न योत्स्य इति गोविन्दमुक्त्वा तूष्णीं बभूव ह || ९ ||

sañjaya uvāca | evam uktvā hṛṣīkeśaṃ guḍākeśaḥ paran-tapa | na yotsya iti govindam uktvā tūṣṇīṃ babhūva ha || 9 ||

"Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus, Arjuna, the chastiser of enemies, told Krishna, 'Govinda, I shall not fight,' and became silent."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Sanjaya narrates the physical and verbal conclusion of Arjuna’s breakdown. Arjuna explicitly states his final decision: 'na yotsya' (I shall not fight). After delivering this absolute verdict, he does something highly significant: 'tūṣṇīṃ babhūva' (he became silent). The torrent of justifications, tears, and panic attacks finally ceases.
