Ch 2Verse 10
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 10

तमुवाच हृषीकेशः प्रहसन्निव भारत | सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये विषीदन्तमिदं वचः || १० ||

tam uvāca hṛṣīkeśaḥ prahasann iva bhārata | senayor ubhayor madhye viṣīdantam idaṃ vacaḥ || 10 ||

"O Dhritarashtra, to him who was sorrowing in the midst of the two armies, Krishna, as if smiling, spoke these words."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The contrast in this verse is cinematic. In the exact center of two massive armies (senayor ubhayor madhye), surrounded by the tension of impending slaughter, sits a completely broken, weeping warrior (viṣīdantam). And looking down at him is Krishna, the master of the senses (Hṛṣīkeśa), doing something utterly unexpected: He is smiling (prahasann iva).
