Ch 2Verse 11
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 11

श्रीभगवानुवाच | अशोच्यानन्वशोचस्त्वं प्रज्ञावादांश्च भाषसे | गतासूनगतासूंश्च नानुशोचन्ति पण्डिताः || ११ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | aśocyān anvaśocas tvaṃ prajñā-vādāṃś ca bhāṣase | gatāsūn agatāsūṃś ca nānuśocanti paṇḍitāḥ || 11 ||

"The Supreme Lord said: While speaking learned words, you are mourning for what is not worthy of grief. Those who are wise lament neither for the living nor for the dead."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The teaching officially begins. Krishna drops a massive philosophical hammer on Arjuna's entire mental framework. He points out a glaring contradiction: Arjuna is speaking like a highly learned scholar (prajñā-vādāṃś), citing scriptures, sociology, and ethics. Yet, his behavior (weeping and collapsing) contradicts his words. Krishna states the absolute baseline of spiritual wisdom: A true 'Paṇḍita' (wise person) does not grieve for the physical body, whether it is currently breathing (living) or has stopped breathing (dead).
