Ch 2Verse 69
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 69

या निशा सर्वभूतानां तस्यां जागर्ति संयमी | यस्यां जाग्रति भूतानि सा निशा पश्यतो मुने: || ६९ ||

yā niśā sarva-bhūtānāṃ tasyāṃ jāgarti saṃyamī | yasyāṃ jāgrati bhūtāni sā niśā paśyato muneḥ || 69 ||

"What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the introspective sage."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna uses a striking paradox to describe the worldview of the enlightened. He states that what is 'night' (niśā)—a time of darkness and sleep—for all ordinary beings (sarva-bhūtānāṃ) is the exact time the self-controlled sage (saṃyamī) is fully awake (jāgarti). Conversely, the 'daytime' when all beings are wide awake and active (yasyāṃ jāgrati bhūtāni) is considered 'night' (niśā) for the introspective, seeing sage (paśyato muneḥ).
