Aligning Consciousness

Ch 2Verse 66
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 66

नास्ति बुद्धिरयुक्तस्य न चायुक्तस्य भावना | न चाभावयत: शान्तिरशान्तस्य कुत: सुखम् || ६६ ||

nāsti buddhir ayuktasya na cāyuktasya bhāvanā | na cābhāvayataḥ śāntir aśāntasya kutaḥ sukham || 66 ||

"One who is not connected with the Supreme [in Krsna consciousness] can have neither transcendental intelligence nor a steady mind, without which there is no possibility of peace. And how can there be any happiness without peace?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna proves his point by showing the negative corollary. He presents a flawless, irrefutable logical sequence. For one who is 'ayuktasya' (un-united, uncontrolled, lacking discipline), there can be no 'buddhiḥ' (transcendental intellect). Without that intellect, there can be no 'bhāvanā' (meditation/steady contemplation). For one who cannot meditate or contemplate (abhāvayataḥ), there is no 'śāntiḥ' (peace). And finally, Krishna poses the ultimate rhetorical question: for one without peace (aśāntasya), where is the possibility of happiness (kutaḥ sukham)?
