Ch 2Verse 63
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 63

क्रोधाद्भवति सम्मोह: सम्मोहात्स्मृतिविभ्रम: | स्मृतिभ्रंशाद्बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति || ६३ ||

krodhād bhavati sammohaḥ sammohāt smṛti-vibhramaḥ | smṛti-bhraṃśād buddhi-nāśo buddhi-nāśāt praṇaśyati || 63 ||

"From anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost one falls down again into the material pool."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The 'Ladder of Fall' reaches its devastating conclusion. Continuing from the anger (Krodha) born in the previous verse, Krishna explains that anger produces complete delusion (sammohaḥ). This delusion causes the bewilderment or wandering of memory (smṛti-vibhramaḥ). When memory is corrupted, the intellect—the capacity to discern right from wrong—is utterly destroyed (buddhi-nāśo). Once the intellect is dead, the human being perishes or falls completely (praṇaśyati), losing all spiritual and moral standing.
