Adhyāya 2 Shloka 62

ध्यायतो विषयान्पुंस: सङ्गस्तेषूपजायते | सङ्गात्सञ्जायते काम: कामात्क्रोधोऽभिजायते || ६२ ||

dhyāyato viṣayān puṃsaḥ saṅgas teṣūpajāyate | saṅgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ kāmāt krodho 'bhijāyate || 62 ||

"While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This verse and the next form the famous 'Ladder of Fall' in the Gita. Krishna details the exact sequence of psychological self-destruction. It begins harmlessly: a person merely contemplates or thinks about (dhyāyato) sense objects (viṣayān). From this repeated contemplation, an attachment or affinity (saṅgas) is born. From attachment, a deep craving or lust (kāmaḥ) develops to possess the object. When this lust is inevitably frustrated or delayed, anger (krodho) violently arises.
