Aligning Consciousness

Ch 2Verse 61
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 61

तानि सर्वाणि संयम्य युक्त आसीत मत्पर: | वशे हि यस्येन्द्रियाणि तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता || ६१ ||

tāni sarvāṇi saṃyamya yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ | vaśe hi yasyendriyāṇi tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā || 61 ||

"One who restrains his senses, keeping them under full control, and fixes his consciousness upon Me, is known as a man of steady intelligence."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having warned Arjuna about the terrifying power of the senses (Verse 60), Krishna provides the ultimate defense mechanism. He commands the seeker to restrain all the senses completely (tāni sarvāṇi saṃyamya) and sit in yoga (yukta āsīta). But restraint alone is not enough; the critical key is 'mat-paraḥ' (fixed upon Me, or devoted to the Supreme). Krishna states that only a person whose senses are fully subjugated to this higher focus (vaśe hi yasyendriyāṇi) can truly have their wisdom firmly established (tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā).
