Ch 2Verse 60
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 60

यततो ह्यपि कौन्तेय पुरुषस्य विपश्चित: | इन्द्रियाणि प्रमाथीनि हरन्ति प्रसभं मन: || ६० ||

yatato hy api kaunteya puruṣasya vipaścitaḥ | indriyāṇi pramāthīni haranti prasabhaṃ manaḥ || 60 ||

"The senses are so strong and impetuous, O Arjuna, that they forcibly carry away the mind even of a man of discrimination who is endeavoring to control them."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers a sobering reality check about the raw power of human biology. He warns Arjuna (Kaunteya) that the senses (indriyāṇi) are turbulent, impetuous, and immensely powerful (pramāthīni). They are so strong that they can forcibly and violently (prasabhaṃ) kidnap the mind (haranti manaḥ). This doesn't just happen to weak people; Krishna explicitly states it happens even to a highly intelligent, discerning person (puruṣasya vipaścitaḥ) who is actively endeavoring to control them (yatato hy api).
